Number 1 Diner: Reviews & Ratings

Got here around 11:30 for an early lunch, and this place was already bustling. In addition to people coming in to eat, there were a lot of take out orders. The interior was nothing fancy, and the small dining room got quite noisy as it filled up, but the food and its reasonable prices will make me want to stop here again.

Delish bacon cheese burger lunch! Fresh salad bar, homemade croutons! Kept our thirst down with real southern sweet tea. Great service with a smile and genuine hospitality. Make sure you stop for lunch or dinner, homemade comfort food to make you very full and happy.

Found this lovely little spot driving back to Charleston from Greensboro. It's your grandma's kitchen with all the fixins. The food was delicious, and plenty of it. We didn't get the salad bar, but it was all fresh veggies and fruits. Everything was clean and tasty, the service was great. The kind of food that sticks to your ribs and reminds you of home. I will definitely return and recommend others.

I give it a 5-star review because everything was fresh, hot, and delicious! I got a double bacon burger and a hot dog. The burger was really homemade ground beef cooked to perfection. It was flavorful and juicy. I got this thing for hot dogs; I'm always looking for that ballpark taste. It wasn't dry at all, and when I took that first bite, I was like, yeah, that's it right there! I'm definitely going back when I'm in the area. They also had home-cooked lunch specials going, too...

My family and I visited earlier today (07/17) on our way back to our home state and generally enjoyed the experience! It felt like a small town, community-focused diner and the food was pretty solid! My only complaint is how the orders are made out for payment. Most of our party ordered sandwiches and burgers, and requested fries as well. It wasn't really specified that the main dishes didn't include a side (exception being the specials on the whiteboard, which come with two sides). For myself, my wife, mother and father in law, and three children, it came to a bit over $80! All in all, a bit on the expensive side, but I'd go back again if in the area again!

My son loves to find new places to eat whenever we are going out of town!! 1 Diner was NOT a disappointment!!! Probably the best burger I had ever eaten!!! My husband had the flounder plate and it was perfectly cooked as well. Just want to say the staff was just as awesome as the food. They made you feel like family. A great diner!! Definitely will go back!!!!

We stopped here for simple and delicious food as described on the reviews. They offer specials every day and today Friday we had the pork chops and fried flounder with side salads (delicious salad buffet with all kind of toppings). This family owned restaurant has been in the business for over 30 years, we met Jenny the owner and we understood why her business is a success, she cooks and cares for customers, we were the last ones to leave before 3pm and had the pleasure to meet her! The server Melany was also so friendly and kind. We love these kind of restaurants, genuine ppl, honest food. Thank you :)

Very community centered diner, old school for sure. They make everything in house and the burger was top tier. Definitely get it with chili. Lot of southern hospitality the manager Jenny is very welcoming.

Nestled in the heart of Rockingham, North Carolina, Number 1 Diner is a genuine homage to classic American comfort food, inviting diners into a warm, unpretentious atmosphere reminiscent of grandma’s kitchen. This unassuming spot, located at 953 S Hancock St, serves up hearty, home-cooked dishes that embody the soul of Southern dining. From the moment you walk in, the aroma of freshly made Salisbury steak simmering in rich gravy mingles with the scent of baked beans and crispy chili fries, promising a satisfying meal that sticks to your ribs.

The menu at Number 1 Diner is a testament to timeless favorites done well. The lunch specials, particularly the Salisbury steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, offer generous portions that fill the plate—and your appetite—without fuss. The double cheeseburger, praised for its juicy, homemade ground beef, stands out as a must-try, capturing that perfect balance of flavor and tenderness. For those seeking fresher fare, the Trip Salad Bar emphasizes crisp vegetables and house-made croutons, bringing a refreshing contrast to the hearty mains.

What truly sets Number 1 Diner apart is its authentic Southern hospitality paired with quality comfort food. Guests rave about the real Southern sweet tea, the homemade bacon cheeseburger, and the bustling yet friendly ambiance that makes every visit feel like a community gathering. Despite its modest, lively dining room, the quality and value of the food shine through, making it a beloved stop for locals and travelers alike.

My experience here was a satisfying journey through familiar, flavorful dishes that comfort and sustain. The sauerkraut and egg McMuffin offer delightful twists on classic diner fare, while the club sandwich and chili fries provide hearty, nostalgic satisfaction. While prices lean slightly higher than expected for a diner, the freshness, portion size, and genuine care in preparation justify the cost. Whether grabbing an early lunch or settling in for dinner, Number 1 Diner delivers a sincere taste of home with every bite.
